Dracula: The Company of Monsters #7 Review

What screams Dracula to you? A lot of blood, seducing beautiful young women, stakes to the heart and crossbows, right? This comic has none of these and replaces them with little humor, no scares and a board meeting. Yes, a board meeting is exactly what I think of when I think about vampires. I expected more from a book about vampires and the direction of this issue had the potential to be interesting but came off rather dull.

In this issue we continue to follow Evan as he teams up with vampire hunter Marta to take down the vampires. The vampire Conrad is also having trouble with his business since his fellow employees want to sell his company.

Robocop Statue Could Happen

In February 2011 there was a humorous ploy asking Detroit Mayor Dave
Bing if there was to be a RoboCop statue in his ‘New Detroit’ proposal,
which is planned to turn Detroit back into a prosperous city again. When
the Mayor said there was no such plan, and word of this reached the
internet, there were several fund raising events to raise enough money
for the statue which would be built at the Imagination Station. There is
yet to be seen if there will actually be a statue built, but it is
reported that over $50,000 has already been raised on the internet.

Detroit — It looks like a RoboCop statue may be erected in Detroit after all.Just
six days after an online fundraising campaign began, a loosely
organized group of Detroiters has raised more than $50,000 to build a
statue to pay homage to the 1987 film. The group met its goal following a $25,000 matching gift Tuesday evening from a company called Omni Consumer Products. The group is using Kickstarter.com, a “crowd-raising” website that challenges visitors to help meet a short-term goal.

Comparing Amnesia and Penumbra

Back in 2010, a Swedish independent developer named Frictional Games released a survival horror game by the name of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It featured no combat, and rather, asked you to survive against unknown horrors in an eighteenth century castle by hiding, running, and general problem solving. It was a huge success for an independent title, selling over 200,000 copies on digital distribution sites, and winning several Game of the Year awards, including some over here at Player Affinity. To some, this is the first title from Frictional Games they’ve seen, those who have followed Frictional before Amnesia, know of their earlier series, Penumbra. Unsurprisingly, the Penumbra games are very similar to Amnesia, from the need for low gamma settings to the stealth gameplay. This is why it’s interesting to see just how similar these games are.

Creator Affinity – Jonathan Hickman

Five years ago if you had said the name Jonathan Hickman most people would have scratched their head and wonder who you were talking about. In 2006, Hickman broke into the comic scene with an Image title “The Nightly News” a comic about a terrorist cell made up of Americans fighting against the media as a whole. The art and design was heavily influenced by graphic design and print ads which resulted in a comic book like nothing else scene at the time. Hickman put so much on the page that you literally had to sit and absorb all the information he was giving you. If this had been any other writer it would have been forgettable and annoying, but something about the intricate design made it beyond interesting.
