‘Contagion’ Writer to Script ‘Apes’ Sequel

The follow-up to last year’s most pleasant surprise has a new writer attached, as Scott Z. Burns has been hired to write the sequel to Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes.Fox hired director Rupert Wyatt to return for part 2, as well as motion-capture specialist Andy Serkis, who provided the physical blueprint for the film’s CG protagonist, Caesar the ape.The story looks to be picking up shortly after the ending of “Rise,” which saw the exodus of a city’s worth of hyper-intelligent apes from San Francisco, while also laying out the initial stages of a viral outbreak destined to wipe out most of humanity.Fox studio CEO Tom Rothman has stated that the hope is to have the simian sequel in theatres for summer 2014.

After weeks of disappointment we finally have the chance to report on a number of strong first releases. Particular highlights are Liam Neeson’s The Grey, the found-footage superpower movie Chronicle and cop drama Rampart. On the re-release front the releases are the thriller The Odessa File and Italian epic 1900.

Channing Tatum could be trading in his old address at 21 Jump Street for 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. The 32-year-old is currently in talks with Sony Pictures to star in White House Down, the next action film from Independence Day and 2012 director Roland Emmerich, who signed on last month. 32 year-old is Channing Tatum is currently in talks with Sony pictures to star in White House Down, the latest film from The Amazing Spider-Man and Zodiac scripter James Vanderbilt.Independence Day director Roland Emmerich signed on to direct the project back in April, along with his producing partner Harald Kloser. The buzz behind White House Down started early, when Sony paid $3 million for the spec script.
