With a darker, more mature tone than the Brothers Grimm story it’s based upon, Tommy Wirkola’s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters envisions the siblings as witch-hunting adults. EW has provided the first look.
As the calendar turns to December, critics circles and awards groups will begin handing out hardware to the year’s best films and performances. In other words, it’s finally Oscar time, and Player Affinity has got predictions for all the major categories. Each week, we’ll dig a little deeper into one of these categories, in order to help with your predictions and to let you know what you ought to catch up with.
“Star Trek” fans have been salivating for sequel news since J.J. Abrams‘ 2009 reboot knocked the franchise back into high-gear. Now, Alive Eve (She’s Out of My League) will join the cast as a new character to the rebooted series.
It seems as if the impending holiday season had put a kibosh on new clips this week (and new releases for this coming weekend as well), but we’ll work with what we have and hope the dawning of December will be fruitful in more ways than one. First off, we have the first full-ish length trailer for the mega-budgeted Disney sci-fi epic John Carter, which aims for an audience I haven’t quite pegged as of yet. Secondly is Being Flynn, the redemptive tale of an author and his son, played by Robert De Niro and Paul Dano respectively. Finally, we bring to you a con-man thriller with Samuel “Mother f$+%&#!”
With barely three months until its release, Disney’s big-budget John Carter adaptation is looking to raise some public awareness with a new trailer released yesterday. Probably the most noticeable change in the marketing has been the increased emphasis on the film’s Martian setting, and the big cast of alien creatures that inhabit it. Rather than the split-second glimpse we got in trailer one, the green-skinned and multi-limbed natives of Mars are on full display here, including Willem Dafoe’s Tars Tarkas, who befriends Civil War vet John Carter following his unexpected interplanetary arrival.
Steve McQueen made a real impact in the film world with his powerful debut Hunger. But like with musicians, there is always the risk that a director’s second movie will not live up to the high expectations the first effort sets. Yet McQueen has a good go with his dark exploration of human character in Shame.
