Resident Evil: Afterlife Review

After three films, many within the fan community felt the “Resident Evil” film franchise, the most lucrative game to film adaptations to date, was wearing a bit thin. Sony/Screen Gems attempted to breath (new?) life into the franchise by repositioning the helmer of the first film, Paul W.S. Anderson, in directorial control of the fourth film, subtitled “Afterlife.” Then, Anderson used the fusion camera system that made the 3-D release of James Cameron’s Avatar such a success, but did it pay off?

Machete Review

Machete (Trejo) gives Jason Voorhees a run for his title with all the glorious knife-wielding and bloodletting. Machete keeps his blade sharp enough and his muscles strong enough to slash through a slew of bodies with the same ease and comfort of putting on deodorant. None of the action is played down. Every household item becomes a weapon, as do body parts. It’s the type of film where villains carry flamethrowers rather than matches.

The American Review

Most “one last job” movies are high-energy action flicks or thrillers driven by a veteran actor playing a character with a troubling back story, but Anton Corbijn’s The American operates as a character-driven mood piece, a precise and quiet visual portrayal of a man trying to quit his dangerous profession who is constantly haunted and pervasively paranoid.

The Last Exorcism Review

Since The Exorcist debuted in 1973, no film about the devil has made such a lasting impression. The Exorcism of Emily Rose was a demure attempt, telling of the fabled possession in flashbacks. It was an effort, but not a memorable one. The Last Exorcism does not outdo The Exorcist nor does it fail at grasping attentionIt sits comfortably on the fence for the majority of the film, bringing its own flair and folly to the subject.

Takers Review

Envision a GQ ad on speed with a dash of The Italian Job and you will have a good idea of what Takers has to offer. Though a slick and mostly kinetic heist flick, there is not a single frame of the entire running length that has not been borrowed from another, usually better, film. I don’t consider it a spoiler to reveal that the structure of the central robbery is identical to that of The Italian Job, down to the street-erupting armoured car interception and traffic light tampering. You would think that with all the talent drifting through Hollywood that they could come up with an original caper at least. Actually, never mind.

Centurion Review

Neil Marshall’s bloody medieval chase flick could very easily be dubbed “King Arthur: the prequel.” The 2004 Clive Owen-feautring King Arthur origin tale essentially picks up where this film ends with the building of Hadrian’s Wall, the ancient Roman fortification that stretched across what is now Northern England. Both films follow a small band of Roman centurion soldiers battling against the native warriors. Though similar in setting and tone, Centurion carves out its own gory slice of guilty pleasure.

City Island Review

Like a number of smaller films this year such as The Kids are All RightPlease GiveWinter’s Bone and the first two films of the Millennium Trilogy, City Island is one of this year’s sleeper indie hits and it is easy to see why. Out on DVD today, it is one of the best movies of the year.

Piranha 3D Review

Piranha 3D isn’t so much a horror flick as it is an extremely gory comedy. How refreshing it is to be surprised by some recent films that are self-aware enough to not treat themselves too seriously. If Piranha 3D did, it would be nothing more than a dismal rip-off of Jaws. Instead, it offers one of the more enjoyable movie experiences so far in 2010. What that says about 2010, I don’t know.

The Switch Review

It is a sad state of romantic comedies when one classified as sweet but forgettable ranks amongst the upper tier of the genre for the year. Surprisingly, The Switch is more dramatic than comedic.  Most of the jokes are so low key you forget that you are supposed to be laughing. Thankfully as was the same with another unfunny comedy this year — She’s Out of My League — strong performances and a tender heart can almost save the day from the doldrums.

Vampires Suck Review

At their very essence spoof movies can easily lack originality. They merely mix and match the plots of earlier films, making caricature of the most memorable or overused moments or characters. Vampires Suck is quite lazy in its efforts to spoof the vampire craze sweeping both television and cinema. It simply mashes the stories of the first three “Twilight” films and throws in penis jokes, fart gags, and pop culture references. The writers wrongly assume that what they have successfully mocked in an entire genre of horror they can easily imagine with only three movies as their source.
