The story of an author incidentally bringing one of his characters to life can go a lot of different directions. There’s an inherent fantasy element, an obvious comedy angle, and in the case of Ruby Sparks, some dramatic potential as well. Actress Zoe Kazan’s screenwriting debut tries to touch on all three.
Len Wiseman’s Total Recall is pretty perfectly comparable to a high-tech theme park ride, or at least it is most enjoyable when thought of as such. Actually, experiencing a ride based on this movie would be quite awesome; its strengths are without a doubt the visual effects work, the futuristic world-building and the countless action sequences.
The Dark Knight Rises is primed to dominate the box office for a third consecutive weekend, as Diary of Wimpy Kid: Dog Days and Total Recall have disappointed critics and could likely disappoint audiences. Lynn Cohen has become the most recent name to join the cast of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. She will play Mags, “an 80-year-old Hunger Games victor from District 4” who mentored Finnick Odair. Sam Clafin, whose Finnick candidacy became news two weeks ago, is now even closer to playing the trident-wielding heartbreaker.
With its director, writers, principal cast and release date all confirmed, about the only thing left unknown about the sequel to X-Men: First Class was what it was going to be called. But no more, as in a recent interview, producer Bryan Singer has revealed the sixth “X-Men” film will be called X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Given that we live in a time in which Hollywood remakes and reboots run rampant, it’s considered taboo to clamor for one. But the truth of the matter is, there are a lot of decent films that have been made over the years that simply could’ve been better.
