Much like EA is trying to take the Call of Duty market with Battlfield 3, they are also trying to take the World of Warcraft market from Activision with Bioware’s first MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic. At this point The Old Republic is nearing the end of its long development cycle and this means that more of the game was shown at this year’s E3 than ever before.
EA have been after the Call of Duty market for quite a few years now and while their previous attempts to dethrone Activision’s ten pound gorilla haven’t been complete failures, so far they’ve been unsuccessful for the most part. EA and DICE are looking to change that with highly anticipated Battlefield 3 and give gamers a ton of new info about their upcoming shooter at E3 this year.
Insomniac have always been one of Sony’s big developers and have a great reputation amongst gamers thanks to both their Ratchet and Clank games and the Resistance franchise which have all been Sony-Console Exclusives. But when Insomniac announced that they would be going multiplatform with their next, game many wondered what it could be.
Hot on the heels of the new film X-Men: First Class, the first details of the latest mutant game X-Men: Destinyhave been released by Publisher Activion Blizzard and Developer Silicon Knights. X-Men: Destiny is an upcoming action game based on the Marvel Franchise and is being developed by Canadian studio Silicon Knights who are best known for the spectacular Gamecube title Eternal Darkness.
Bioware has released the embargo on the release date for their highly anticipated title, Mass Effect 3, now slated to appear on March 16, 2012 for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC platforms. Additionally, the Xbox 360 version is slated to ship with Kinect support. No, you won’t be controlling your Shepard with motion controls (not yet, anyway), but you will be able to control your squadmates using unforseen voice recognition brought on board by the Kinect’s unique hardware and software.
Right, this is it, the first impression of a game that has been in development since 1997. Can it live up to 14 years of expectations? Or perhaps a better question is, what do you expect from a game with such a long development time? Do you really expect the greatest game of all time? Well, I hope for your sake that you don’t. When you’re playing a game with history like this, it is hard to know where to draw the line. Duke Nukem 3D was revolutionary when it came out, but plenty of shooters have come along in the Duke’s absence and put their own spin on the genre. I’m not going to talk about Duke Nukem Forever like I’ve been on the edge of my seat for the last 14 years waiting for it, because I haven’t. Instead, I’ll simply tell you about the content of the demo and how that stacks against the standards of the shooter genre today.
Fan’s of the massively online space game EVE online have long been awaiting news on CCP Games next project “DUST 514”. At Sony’s E3 Press Conference this year, CCP unveiled details of the games release.
