Tech Preview: The Razer Switchblade

There
has always been a strong divide between PC and console gamers. Console
gamers seem to like the simplicity and ease of use that their consoles
provide while PC gamers love the freedom and control they have over
their gaming. A common reason why many PC gamers stick with the platform
despite the many alarmist claims that the PC gaming market is dying is
the strength of the mouse and keyboard control scheme.
No
joystick will ever come near the precision and control that a mouse can
and with a keyboard it’s almost impossible for a game to be limited by
the number of buttons on your controller.
That’s where the Razer
Switchblade comes in. Razer has tried to fuse the best components of the
PC gaming, console gaming and handheld gaming experiences with their
experimental concept gaming device, the Switchblade.

Like Gels in Portal 2? Play Tag

By now, most of you have probably played Portal 2, the sequel to the critically acclaimed Valve puzzle game. There are still portals, but there are also plenty of new puzzle elements to keep things fresh. Two of those puzzle elements in Portal 2 are the Repulsion Gel and Propulsion Gel, but this is not the first time gels have been used in a puzzle game.

EA Confirms No Battlefield 3 Demo

Despite prior rumors, EA confirmed that there will not be a pre-release Battlefield 3 demo. This rumor began when Patrick Bach told MSXbox-World that an early Battlefield 3 demo would be released. It made sense, since EA is positioning Battlefield 3 to be a Call of Duty killer, and a pre-release demo would be a fine way to lure Call of Duty regulars to try out Battlefield in the fall while waiting for the next installment of Activision’s juggernaut. Bach did not specifically call out a demo, but answered positively to a question about a demo, not giving any details on gameplay. An EA spokesperson has said that Patrick Bach, when telling MSXbox-World of a pre-release demo, was actually referring to the multiplayer beta.

Alice: Madness Returns – Preview

There’s one thing that hardcore action gamers agree on:  We need more games where the main character is a little girl in a frilly dress.  It’s been over ten years since shooter fans last got to run around as Alice in the original American McGee’s Alice, and it’s high time that pinafores and petticoats were brought back to the third-person shooter genre.  Fortunately, we won’t have to wait much longer for the chance to kill things at a tea party, because Alice: Madness Returns comes out in a few weeks.

Valve Hammer Editor Overview

With the release of Portal 2, many people, especially PC users, have decided to revisit the freely available editor (to anyone who has purchased a Source-based game) that allows players to construct maps used in the Valve library. Whereas previous versions supported GoldSrc, Quake and Quake II, the current version of the Valve Hammer Editor can only be used in conjunction with Source titles. It remains one of the most accessible and easy to use editors on the market, with large icons, help files and tooltips to get a beginner started without much trouble. Exemplifying the concept of ‘simple to learn but hard to master’ the Source engine is being constantly improved upon with new tools and additions that accommodate technological breakthroughs in the industry.

Hi-Rez Studios Announces SMITE

Hi-Rez Studios first gained recognition through their Tribes-styled MMORPG, Global Agenda. While Global Agenda
was quite good when it launched, it has changed significantly since
then with the game getting a major overhaul in the Sandstorm updates and
even more recently when Hi-Rez changed the game to a free-to-play
model. Hi-Rez Studios is also working on the new Tribes games, the MMO shooter Tribes Universe and Tribes: Ascend.

Section 8: Prejudice Preview

Section 8 was a bit of a missed gem of 2009 to me. It was a solid objective-based FPS with some really cool new mechanics that hadn’t been seen before. Prior to this, Timegate wasn’t really a big name in the gaming industry, sure they had released the Kohan RTS games and some F.E.A.R. expansions but Section 8 could be seen as their play for the Science Fiction FPS market that Halo was exiting. The sequel Section 8: Prejudicelooks to build upon those fun mechanics of the original but is also going to add truckloads more content and slice the price of the game down to $15.
