Covert Affairs – Communication Breakdown

I’m kind of perplexed by this week’s episode. Since the beginning of the show Auggie has been far and away my favorite character and you would think an episode devoted to his character development would be awesome. However, in giving Auggie most of the screen time they made his character less special and, if we are to believe this is his new path, rather generic and boring. We all knew that Auggie was a strong individual whom had a past that we, nor the majority of the characters, were privy to. In Communication Breakdown we are shown more of who he is but it just is not who we wanted him to be.

True Blood – I Smell a Rat

Last week ended with one of the most explosive ends to any episode in the history of… ever. Russell Edgington ripped the spine from a news reporter live on air and basically declared war on the Human race. The latest episode fails to capitalize on this, but we do finally find out what the hell Sookie is.

Mad Men – The Chrysanthemum and the Sword

Don Draper’s personal life may be in shambles, he may be drinking more than ever and striking out with women left and right, but at least in this week’s episode we finally get to see him resemble the Don Draper of old at work.  After witnessing a rare professional failure from Don a few weeks ago, while pitching to Janzen swimwear, it was refreshing to see him back in his element.  The victory may be modest; he doesn’t even win the Honda account he’s going for, he simply stops a competing firm from getting it and causes them to spend a lot of money in a losing effort.  But in this season, when we’ve seen Don pathetically passed out in the hallway of his apartment building, we’ll take any victory we can get.

Eureka – Stoned

Tonight’s episode of Eureka sees the return of a slightly older Zoe, an mysterious meeting between Dr Grant and what appears to be a secret organization, as well as some genuine movement in the ‘never quiet there’ relationship between Carter and Allison.

Futurama – The Prisoner of Benda

This week’s episode was one of the rare episodes that put the science portion of the show at the forefront and wraps an interesting narrative around it. The Prisoner of Benda has many similarities to the classic Futurama episode, The Farnsworth Paradox. While the former is not quite as good as the latter, the episode succeeds on its own merits.

Covert Affairs – Houses of the Holly

The show has really come into its own. While it may have taken a couple months, I can now say that I genuinely look forward to every episode. The characters are really starting to come into their own. Before they were archetypical and only average, now they are nuanced, with their desires and faults being shown instead of being hidden. Nearly everyone gives a solid performance.

Leverage – The Underground Job

At this point it’s probably time to accept what Leverage is and embrace it, warts and all.  The show, in its third season, seems perfectly content to follow the same blueprint, week after week, with nary a bit of growth or development.  If you’ve watched Leverage before then you’ll know if you’re a fan or not, and if the show’s positives outweigh it negatives for you, then that’s the best you’re going to get.  Those of us who enjoy the show but are still waiting for it to improve on its nagging issues and make a leap in quality should stop holding our breath.

True Blood – Everything is Broken

The gloves have been decisively removed tonight and if the start of the season saw the narrative crawl, Everything is Broken charges the defibrillator and sets undead pulses firmly racing again.  With one of the most explosive ends to an episode since… well ever, the True Blood Universe has been expanded, as Russell Edgington’s fury is unleashed on the world stage.

Mad Men – The Rejected

With ‘The Rejected’, the Mad Men world finally enters the 60s.  True, it’s now 1965, and the entire run of the show has taken place after 1960, but up until this point the counter-culture movement that the decade is remembered for, has been in the background.  They’ve been hinting at it, such as last week when Don teased Anna’s niece about the Berkley College sit-ins.  But now it’s here, in an episode that is both the strongest and the funniest of the season. The characters are going to need to decide whether to go along with it or hang on to their old ways.

Futurama – A Clockwork Origin

In a previous review, I mentioned how even when Futurama misses a beat, it is still one of the most entertaining shows on television. I feel like that assessment applies to this episode. On it the surface it has all the makings of a classic Futurama episode. However, it never turns the proverbial corner and becomes something special. A Clockwork Origin attempts to tackle the rather large issue of creationism vs. evolution but eventually just skirts the question and offers up some good laughs amongst some uncharacteristic misses.
